Healthier sleep makes happier families
Before my son was born, I’d always believed that babies and children simply slept when they were tired. And at first my son did seem to fit the phrase “sleeping like a baby”, but several months later, faced with disappearing naps, bedtime struggles, and 5 a.m. wakings, I couldn’t understand where things had gone wrong.
I read a stack of books on children’s sleep, and tried applying some of the principles I had learned and implemented as a psychologist and therapist treating adult sleep problems. But the information available was often confusing, and sometimes contradictory. While my own sleep was suffering, it became harder and harder to make sense of all of the advice out there, with each “expert” insisting that theirs was the only right solution.
Exhausted and at the end of my rope, I hired a professional child sleep consultant. Together we came up with a plan to fit my son’s age, temperament, sleep history, and the practical needs of our family. Within a couple of weeks everyone in the house was sleeping better and able to enjoy our waking time together much more.
Inspired by our family’s experience, I underwent training as a certified child sleep consultant in order to support other families, like my own, who are in need of a better night’s rest. I learned about the science behind children’s sleep, as well as proven techniques to deal with specific sleep challenges. I also went back to my roots in psychology and got further education specifically in child and adult sleep. Now I bring together my extensive experience as a therapist and specialized training in child and adult sleep to help families tackle sleep issues on an individual basis, taking into account their unique situations and needs.
Sleep is food for the brain and essential for general well-being. Most children and adults to not get the sleep they need and school, work, relationships, and health suffer as a result. When you give the gift of healthier sleep to your children and yourself the benefits are profound and dramatic. It would be my pleasure to help you see and experience those benefits for yourself.
Sasha Carr, Ph.D., provides private sleep consultations to families with babies and young children who are struggling with common sleep challenges, including: difficulty going to bed; frequent night wakings; inconsistent naps; and early waking. Dr. Carr also guides families through normal developmental sleep transitions, including: moving from two naps to one; from one nap to none; from parent’s room to own room; and from crib to big-kid bed. Finally she helps families with special situations including multiples and children with medical, behavioral and developmental issues.
Consultations are based on Dr. Carr’s scientific knowledge of biological and behavioral sleep patterns in babies, children, and adults, as well as her understanding of the influence of factors such as physical surroundings and parents’ emotions and behavior on child sleep. Rather than apply a single “one-size-fits-all” philosophy, Dr. Carr chooses from an array of techniques based on the needs and parenting styles of individual families.
In addition to giving expert sleep guidance, Dr. Carr also applies her extensive experience as a psychologist and therapist to help parents navigate what can be a very emotionally challenging process, especially when everyone in the house is sleep-deprived. In some cases she also helps parents address their own sleep difficulties. There is little that is more frustrating than getting the kids all settled and still ending up tossing and turning all night yourself!
Whatever your family’s needs, be it straightforward practical advice, problem solving, emotional support, or help with getting everyone to agree and be comfortable with a plan, Dr. Carr will be there for you throughout the process, listening, guiding, comforting, and cheering you on as you get your family’s sleep on track.
Consultation packages are available over the phone or in person. All consultations start with a detailed assessment of your family’s situation and needs and include a clear and detailed written plan for you to follow. Dr. Carr will provide follow-up support over phone and email so you won’t be left to muddle through on your own.
