My personal primary goal is to help all pregnant woman have an educated and empowering pregnancy and delivery and to encourage families to strive for a life of optimal wellness utilizing natural health care.

Practitioner Story

Over the past 20 plus years in practice, I have often been asked by patients why I decided to become a chiropractic physician. Although there are many chiropractors who found their way to our profession after they had some miraculous healing experience with their own health (like my husband did after injuring his back power-lifting), I do not have such a story. However, since I was very young, perhaps as early as 4 years old, I knew I was going to be a doctor. As a child I spent time watching shows like Marcus Welby, M.D. and reading World Book Encyclopedias (not to show my age at all!) to research all aspects of science and health. Yet, it was not until my junior year at the State University of New York at Binghamton, when I was focusing on Medical School admission, that I actually became intrigued by the Chiropractic profession. As an athlete all of my life with a great interest in nutrition, the hands-on, natural chiropractic approach was a fantastic integration of my professional goals and personal interests. It was not an easy decision at all to change my professional direction within health care at that time, in fact I think it was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made, but I am certainly glad I chose Chiropractic!

While at Chiropractic School, I also met my husband, Dr. Mark Joachim, and we established our family focused chiropractic practice together in Norwalk, Connecticut shortly after our wedding. We have been blessed with two wonderful daughters and it was my empowering experience with my own pregnancies and natural deliveries, as well as raising my family in a holistic environment focusing on optimal health and well-being that made my passion for caring for pre- and post-natal moms and children even stronger. I then decided to pursue a 3 year post-doctorate degree and Board Certification in Maternity and Pediatric Care (DICCP: Diplomate of the International Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics), and I am now one of only ten Chiropractic Physicians in Connecticut to have earned this degree.

Over the years, we have focused on continuing our healthcare education so that we can offer several different natural health care options for families. Much of our efforts have been driven by our desire to care for our own children in the least invasive manner as possible. When our youngest daughter suffered from eczema (which was related to food allergies associated with breast feeding, we set out to find a solution that did not involve medications or steroid creams. Our research led us to the BioSET Allergy Elimination Technique and Dr. Joachim became the first and only physician in Connecticut to have obtained an advanced certification in this non-invasive, drug-free and injection-free approach that can diagnose and permanently eliminate food, environmental and chemical allergies.

About Practice

Associates in Family Chiropractic and Natural Health Care, P.C focuses on providing exceptional chiropractic treatment for all stages of pre- and post-natal care and for children of all ages and abilities. In addition to specializing in the care of pre and post-natal women, Dr. Sloves provides pediatric chiropractic care including cranial sacral treatment. In addition to chiropractic, she is certified in both the Webster and Bagnell Breach Turning Techniques as well as acupuncture and possesses specialized training in treating scoliosis in children and adults.

A large part of Dr. Sloves' practice is wellness care-families who choose to come in without any symptoms for check-ups to make sure they have no subluxations. Without subluxations there is no stress on their nervous system and as a result their immune system is stronger and they probably won’t get sick as often or at all!

Whether you are pregnant and suffering needlessly with symptoms such as low back pain and headaches, or need help turning your baby in the breech presentation to avoid a Cesarean Section, or your child suffers with colic or ear infections, or your husband, mother or father is in agony with a herniated lumbar disc or sports injury, our expertise will help you all in a completely natural and non-invasive manner.

With the unfortunate recent rise in pediatric conditions such as allergies, asthma, gastrointestinal disorders and sensory integration disorders, both Dr. Sloves and Dr. Joachim have become experts in their respective fields and can truly offer their patients a natural integrative approach to their healthcare.

Other services include

  • BioSET Allergy Elimination Technique: non-invasive, drug-free and injection-free approach that can diagnose and permanently eliminate food, environmental and chemical allergies.

  • Acupuncture-traditional with needles and electrical acupuncture without needles

  • Non-Surgical DRX 9000 True Spinal Decompression facility for patients suffering with herniated/ bulging, or degenerated discs, sciatica, stenosis and failed low back surgery.

Specialties

Since our brain and nervous system control the function of every cell, tissue, and organ of our bodies (and our unborn baby’s body) it is vitally important for our nervous system to operate at 100% for optimal health. Our spine protects our spinal cord and when a spinal bone shifts out of normal alignment it may produce abnormal motion and damaging pressure on spinal nerves. This condition is known as vertebral subluxation and, if present, it may interrupt the vital nerve flow within our bodies and to our baby. Dr. Sloves is 1 of 10 Chiropractic Physicians in Connecticut who is board certified in maternity and pediatric care and she is specially trained to diagnosis and correct vertebral subluxations in pre- and post-natal mothers and children of all ages and abilities.

PLANNING A FAMILY

  • Many infertility specialists are now focusing on the benefits of natural approaches to help their patients and the results appear to be positive and some even say “miraculous”.

  • Recent research has shown positive benefits of chiropractic care for infertility resulting in women conceiving.

  • In each of these cases the chiropractic care was specific for the detection and correction of vertebral subluxations that were determined to be interfering with the normal function of the nervous system. Virtually every region of the spine affects a nerve that has something to do with fertility. For example, nerves in the neck affect the pituitary gland and thyroid gland that have direct effect on the ability to make the hormones essential for pregnancy. Nerves in the mid and low back affect the female reproductive organs such as the fallopian tubes, ovaries and uterus (as well as the prostate gland and reproductive organs of the male). Stress on these nerves can negatively affect the function of the patient’s reproductive system. Chiropractic care removes this stress and it can improve fertility function.

EXPECTING

Subluxations are an inherent part of pregnancy because during pregnancy, the dynamics of the spine and pelvis change dramatically and the potential for damage to the musculoskeletal system is great. A growing uterus during pregnancy produces a shift in the center of gravity, and along with the hormonal changes a woman’s posture becomes unstable and as a result stresses joints, nerves, muscles, and connective tissue.

Realignment of the spine and pelvis can be achieved through chiropractic care and can help alleviate the following symptoms:

  • back pain

  • sciatica

  • tingling and numbness in the arms or legs

  • pain in the rib cage

  • neck pain

  • carpal tunnel syndrome

  • headaches

  • pubic pain

  • nausea and vomiting

  • pain during labor and delivery

Additional benefits include: reduced number of breach presentations, reduced labor time, reduced cesarean section rates, less labor intervention, and a quicker recovery.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy does in fact decrease a mother’s low-back pain and reduces labor time by 50-60% and specific chiropractic adjustments keep the pelvis in proper alignment, making delivery quicker and easier.

NEW PARENT

After delivery, the new mom’s spine not only undergoes more rapid changes, but it is often forced to incur many more stresses associated with newborn and infant care such as holding, lifting, nursing, etc. In the postpartum period, subluxations often cause many symptoms that can be alleviated with adjustments. These conditions include

  • lower back and pelvic pain

  • pain after epidural

  • pubic pain or dysfunction

  • neck, shoulder and arm pain

  • wrist and hand pain

  • tingling or numbness,

  • headaches

  • mid back pain

  • other neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

Chiropractic care detects and corrects these subluxations and eliminates these and other symptoms.

GROWING FAMILY

Chiropractic Care for Newborns and Children

Even in a natural vaginal delivery, infants face a pretty rough ride through the birth canal. According to infant health expert Abraham Towbin, M.D., “The birth process, even under natural and controlled conditions, is potentially traumatic.” The birth process alone can cause many conditions that would affect your newborn.

In fact, the skull, although often thought of as 1 bone, is actually made up of 22 bones. During the normal birth process, several of these cranial bones need to overlap in a specific manner and the baby’s head has to go through a series of specific motions in order to navigate through the mother’s bony pelvis and birth canal for delivery. Research shows that in a normal, average vaginal delivery, there may be between 40 to 70 pounds of force exerted on a newborn’s head and neck during delivery, So, even a normal delivery without any intervention, can potentially strain the delicate spinal joints in the baby’s neck, resulting in subluxations and nerve dysfunction. Subluxations in the young often do not result in pain and can be completely unnoticed by parents and medical physicians, so it is important for all babies to be checked by a pediatric chiropractor.

Some of the most common pediatric conditions encountered in the office are:

  • colic

  • feeding issues associated with “tongue tie”,

  • gastric reflux

  • ear infections

  • asthma

  • allergies

  • torticollis and/or plagiocephaly (change in shape of the head)

  • scoliosis

  • bedwetting

  • growing pains

  • headaches

  • constipation

  • gastric reflux

  • pervasive developmental disorders such as ADD/ADHD

  • autism

  • sports injuries

  • lowered immune function.

Furthermore, children with conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down’s Syndrome and other disabilities can benefit greatly from chiropractic care.

In addition to the physical distress of the birth process, infants will endure general falls and traumas as they grow and develop which can also result in nerve dysfunction. Common physical causes for vertebral subluxations during the first year may include sleeping in a car seat with inadequate support of the head, neck and spine, falls off of the bed or changing table, or falls when learning to walk. As your child grows, sporting activities can induce physical trauma as can prolonged or repetitive postures such as playing computer games, watching TV or carrying backpacks. According to The Journal of Paediatrics, parents frequently take their children to chiropractic physicians for many health complaints, the most common of which are symptoms of respiratory tract dysfunction, ear/nose/throat dysfunction, allergies, skin conditions, gastrointestinal complaints and prevention.

Now more than ever before, parents are searching for proactive lifestyle habits that will nurture their children’s health. Chiropractic awareness is shifting from being an intervention not only for pain-relief, but for a more proactive, wellness-oriented healthcare choice. Dr. Candice Pert (a recognized leader in the field of psychoneuroimmunology) credits chiropractic as having a “significant effect on maximizing immunity via maintenance of a healthy nervous system” and Dr. Ronald Pero, PhD, Chief of Cancer Prevention Research at New York’s Preventative Medicine Institute determined that chiropractic patients had a 200% greater immune-competence than people who had no chiropractic care. Pero, who has published more than 160 papers in peer-reviewed journals, firmly believes that, “Chiropractic care optimizes whatever genetic abilities an individual has to resist disease.”
