Let’s face it, expectant and new moms (and just moms, in general!) need all the energy they can get! This nutritious shake provides a balanced meal rich in protein, essential fatty acids, carbohydrates and fiber. It will maintain steady blood sugar levels, thereby providing sustained energy throughout the morning! All ingredients may be found at natural food markets.
1 scoop high-quality whey protein powder
8 oz. of plain almond, rice or cow’s milk (preferably 2%, organic)
1-2 Tablespoons whole flax seeds, ground in a small coffee grinder (a great source of essential fatty acids)
1 Tablespoon lecithin granules (a rich source of phosphatidyl choline, a critical brain nutrient for fetus, nursing baby and mom!)
1 scoop of green food powder or 1 rounded teaspoon of spirulina powder (a great source of minerals & other nutrients)
½ – 1 cup of frozen or fresh blueberries, or other berry (use only organic strawberries)
1 small chunk of banana (about ¼)
1 ice cube, if desired (no ice is needed if you are using frozen blueberries)
1/4 – 1/2 cup of water (start with less and add more to reach desired consistency)
Blend until smooth (a minute or less) but do not over-blend as the whey becomes too frothy (the lecithin helps to prevent this)…ENJOY!
* As a real time saver, I recommend premixing several portions of the dry ingredients together in small containers stored in the fridge…in the morning just throw the dry ingredients together with the milk and fruit and you’ll have a nutritious breakfast in less than two minutes…and one that is easily portable in a sturdy leak-proof cup.
* Due to the fat content of flax seeds, they must be stored in the refrigerator or freezer to prevent rancidity.
